Saturday, 25 July 2015

The unremitting heavy rainfall for last three consecutive days caused a serious disruption to civic life, port and businesses activities in Chittagong. The incessant heavy shower forced Hazrat Shah Amanat (R) International Airport delay in operations of several flights as its runway went underwater for a few hours, airport sources said. Sufferings of the city residents know no bounds when bulk of the city areas went under knee to waist down water for unprecedented and unrelieved heavy rain throughout Friday and Saturday. The downpour which began on Thursday night and continued till Saturday afternoon caused huge water logging and inundation of the dwelling houses of the low lying areas. There was serious dislocation in normal public life, port activities as well as all sorts of business activities due to incessant rain that triggered heavy water logging in most parts of the port city. The loading and unloading of bulk-cargo ships at the outer anchorage at the port was hampered owing to heavy rain while operational activities in container handling also affected, port sources said. Patenga Meteorological office recorded 218 millimeters of rainfall on Friday noon. Heavy rain created water logging in many areas including Lalkhan Bazar, Pahartali, Bahaddarhat, Muradpur, Chandgaon, Shulakbahar, Bakalia, Patharghata, Asadganj, Korbaniganj, Chaktai, Nasirabad, Patantuli, Madarbari, Agrbad and Halishahar. Rains also washed away Bangladesh's first Test against South Africa, forcing the authorities to declare the match drawn on the fifth and final day at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Saturday, according to a news agency.
