Unrest in industrial zones

Sunday, 8 September 2024

The recent unrest in the industrial zones of Savar, Ashulia, and Gazipur has brought the nation's key export sector to a critical juncture. More than a hundred apparel factories have been forced to shut down, some of which have been attacked by both outsiders and protesting workers. The situation reached a point when a joint operation by the army and police was necessary to restore order. This unrest poses a significant threat not only to the economy but also to the stability of the entire
According to reports, the protests began with outsiders demanding jobs, which quickly escalated into vandalism and looting when their demands were not met. Subsequently, workers from various factories joined the protests with their own grievances, including demands for reduced workloads, increased allowances, and the cessation of undue terminations. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) leaders have identified political motives behind the unrest, with outsiders allegedly being incited by certain political figures.
The unrest has had a profound impact on factory operations, leading to significant disruptions and financial losses. Factory owners, industrial police, and trade union leaders have expressed concerns about the involvement of political groups and local traders in exploiting the situation, especially in the wake of the recent government change.
A meaningful dialogue between factory owners, workers, and the government to address the legitimate concerns of the workforce is necessary. The demands being made by workers, such as fair treatment, job security, and better working conditions, must be taken seriously and addressed in accordance with existing labour laws.
Furthermore, it is necessary to investigate and hold accountable those who are instigating violence and unrest in the industrial zones. The allegations of political involvement and using the situation by certain groups must be thoroughly examined, and appropriate legal action should be taken against those responsible.
