Wednesday, 19 February 2014
The Election Commission on Wednesday afternoon said the first phase of elections in 97 upazila of the country’s 40 districts were largely peaceful. The commission, however, said voting in only two polling stations at Shailakupa upazila of Jhenidah and Nawabganj in Dhaka was postponed till 3:30pm. EC acting secretary Sirajul Islam said this at a press briefing at the Media Centre of the commission secretariat. As his attention was drawn to BNP’s allegation of massive irregularities in the election, the EC acting secretary said, “The (upazila) election is a non-partisan election. So, there is no scope for any political party to come up with any allegation. So far, we’ve not got information of any vote rigging anywhere.” The voting in the 97 upazilas was held from 8am to 4pm without any break, according to UNB.
