Upazila election result: An eye opener

Sunday, 2 March 2014

The recent upazila elections show a sharp decline in the popularity of the ruling party. It is surely not a good time for the party as it is under pressure from many foreign countries to arrange a fresh, all-participatory parliamentary election. In the 10th parliamentary election, half of the voters could not exercise their voting rights as most of the candidates won uncontested. The election result also did not reflect the expectation of the common people. It was a farce that dented the confidence of the common people on democracy. It is sad that the ruling party has been alienated from the common people after the January 05 election. The government's repression on the opposition parties has turned out to be a blessing in disguise for them as people voted for them to anger their anger against the ruling party.
The ruling party has many seasoned leaders who understand the grievances of the people. We hope they will come forward and raise their voice so that the ruling party realises its mistake of arranging an election like the January 05 one. We cannot dream of a prosperous and peaceful country without a free press, independent judiciary and fair election.
