Upazila polls in February

Sunday, 19 January 2014

The Election Commission has said several upazila councils will go to polls in February as their terms are coming to an end. Bangladesh has 147 upazila councils. Tenures of over 100 of them will end by mid-February. "Terms of some upazilas are ending in the middle of February. There is a legal obligation to hold elections there," Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said Saturday. However, Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations are slated for February and the tests might coincide with polling in some areas. "We want to hold elections without causing problems to the students," he said.
