UPDF opposes govt actions in CHT

RANGAMATI, July 11: Leaders of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) has alleged that the government is trying to torture the leaders and workers of their organisation through military operation in Chittagong Hill Tracts.
They said, in a recent meeting held at the Prime Minister's Office, there was a decision to keep the UPDF under government's control, which the leaders termed as undemocratic.
They strongly opposed the government's decision and urged the government to withdraw it immediately.
UPDF leaders said this in a press conference today at its office at Kutukchhari Bazar under Sadar Upazila.
So far, some 30 persons including their leaders and supporters were tortured and harassed by military personnel after the decision taken at the PM's office, they said.
UPDF leaders also made a five-point demand in the press conference, including immediate stopping of harassment, torture and arrest of their members and supporters, unconditional release of their members and compensation to those who were tortured, cancellation of the decision taken by the government to control UPDF, postponement of 'Operation Uttaran' and stopping of the operation at Sazek.
Michel Chakma, district unit leader of Gonotantrik Jubo Forum, an associate body of UPDF, read out a paper containing the demands. Its leaders Karmo Dhan Chakma, Satya Priya Chakma, Indrajit Chakma were also present in the press conference.
