Upturn in summer vegetables prices

Prices of a few summer vegetables were high on Friday while rice witnessed a slight fall.
Traders said while chicken meat, garlic prices reduced, ginger prices increased significantly.
Overall, they said, other commodity prices remained static on the day.
Rice prices went down by Tk 1-2 per kg last week thanks to a reduction at the mill-gates in rice growing hubs.
Swarna varieties were sold at Tk 34-35 per kg, Pariza variety at Tk 40-42, Miniket variety at Tk 44-50, Najirshail at Tk 46-54 per kg on Friday at the retail markets--Tk 1-2 decline at per kg compared with a week ago.
"Rice price has declined a little at the wholesale level, which helped cut the price," Mohosin Ali, a retailer at Nowabganj Bazar in the older part of the city, said.
Matiur Rahman, a rice wholesaler at Kochukhet Rice wholesale market in the city, said that prices of rice declined in the mill gates in Rangpur, Dinajpur, Jaypurhat, Naogaon, Ishwardi and Kustia recently.
"Truck fare has also reduced which help cut prices," he said.
According to the Bangladesh Auto, Major Husking Mills Owners Association, prices of different varieties of rice (excluding Brri-28) at the mill gates reduced by Tk2-3 per kg in last ten days.
Snake gourd, bitter gourd, sponge gourd (dhundal), ridge gourd (jhinga) and okra hit the market but prices were higher.
Per kg bitter gourd or snake gourd was sold at Tk 80-100 per kg, pointed, ridge, sponge gourds at Tk70-80 per kg, moringa (sajna) at Tk 100-120 per kg.
Other seasonal vegetable prices were stagnant on the day. Kohlrabi (olcopy), potato and papaya were the cheapest vegetable and sold at Tk12, Tk10 and Tk16-20 per kg respectively.
Chicken meat (farm) price reduced by Tk3-5 per kg and was sold at Tk138-140 per kg on the day. Ginger price increased significantly after a halt in ginger imports. Local varieties of ginger were sold at Tk130-140 per kg, retailers said.
Prices of fish, meats (excluding chicken meat), milk, egg, sugar, salt, pulses, flour, spices, tea etc were stable.
