Urban Food Production Day observed in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Mar 3: Rangpur Municipality with the assistance of the Urban Partnership for Poverty Reduction (UPPR) Project funded by UK Aid and UNDP observed Urban Food Production (UFP) Day through several events Tuesday on March 1, 2011. The objective of the day was to create social mobilisation for increasing food, nutrition and income security of the people living in poor settlements through optimum uses of agricultural resources. The events of the day were mass colourful rally, discussion meeting and Exhibition on urban food production technologies. The discussion meeting was held at Rangpur Town Hall. Narayan Chandra Barma, Additional Divisional Commissioner of Rangpur, was present as chief guest, while Dr. Md. Azharul Islam, District Livestock Officer, Rangpur and Mr. Mostafijur Rahman (Mostafa), Sadar Upazila Chairman were present as special guests in the discussion meeting. At the beginning of the meeting Emdad Hossain delivered the address of welcome. Then keynote paper on the Progress of Urban Agriculture Activities of UPPR Project was delivered by Joinal Abedin, Town Manger of the UPPR Project. The meeting was chaired by Idrish Ali, panel Mayor, Rangpur Municipality. In the speeches the guests put emphasis on the importance of the day and requested all relevant stakeholders to come forward for facilitating urban food production. Among others, councillors and community leaders spoke on the importance of the Urban Food Production Day. Above 450 people from community leaders of poor settlements of municipality, representatives from NGOs, private and government sectors, media etc participated in all the events of the day with much enthusiasm. People of all strata visited and enjoyed the Urban Food Production Day Exhibition. They visited the stalls displayed model of technologies for urban food production such as one farm one house, vegetable gardening, apiculture, catfish culture, etc and many of them learned about these urban based food production technologies to adopt their own contexts.
