PANCHAGARH, June 9 (UNB) : Prevailing urea fertilizer crisis may hit jute cultivation in the district in the current season.
Jute cultivators said that they could not use urea on about 550 hectares of land, as they didn't receive any for the last two months.
Department of Agricultural Extension said the government allocated only 79 tonnes urea for the district for the current month against the demand of 176 tonnes. But the district is yet to receive the allocated fertilizer.
Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, farmer of Boleya village in Sadar upazila, said he brought one acre of land under jute cultivation this season but could not use fertilizer till now.
Fertilizer trader Abdul Hannan Sheikh said he lifted 10 mts urea, allocated for the month of May, on April 12 but those were sold within two to three days.
He said he has been permitted to lift only one tonne urea for the month of June.
Deputy Director of DAE Abul Hayat expressed the hope that the situation would be improved as the government has appointed 50 dealers to distribute the allotted 79 mts of urea for the current month.
