Awami League’s US chapter vice president Nazmul Islam was strangulated to death after being hit on the head and face, doctors said. New York police recovered the 55-year-old leader’s body on Thursday (local time) from the Ozone Park area. Doctors at Jamaica Hospital said Islam was dead when brought into the hospital. Police have started an investigation into the murder but no breakthrough was reported until Friday evening. US Awami League’s joint general secretary Abdus Samad Azad said police were examining surveillance footage obtained from the area where Islam’s body was found. Bangladesh’s permanent envoy to the UN, AKA Momen, said the dead leader was very active and has upset the whole community. Islam, hailing from Sylhet’s Bianibazar, went to the US in 1982.
