US Embassy greets Bangladesh

US Embassy in Dhaka has congratulated Bangladesh on Thursday for becoming a lower-middle income country, meeting the World Bank (WB)’s requirements. Bangladesh and three other countries were upgraded to the lower-middle income category by the WB, with Bangladesh’s per capita income rising from US $1,190 to $1,314. Earlier, the WB upgraded Bangladesh to a lower middle-income country from a lower-income country. Apart from Bangladesh, three other countries – Kenya, Myanmar, and Tajikistan – have become lower-middle income countries, joining those with annual incomes of $1,046 to $4,125, according to the latest data published by the WB on Wednesday. The WB’s latest estimates of Gross National Income per capita (GNI) continue to show improved economic performance in many low-income countries, including Bangladesh, Kenya, Myanmar, and Tajikistan, according to a news agency.
