US Ambassador James F Moriarty Wednesday welcomed the lifting of the state of emergency with a hope that it would help the condition for free, fair and credible parliamentary polls, reports BSS/ UNB.
He also hoped the election would bring Bangladesh successfully back on democratic path again.
"I'm actually very hopeful. This is something that we have advocated - for lifting of the emergency," he said. "This is up to the parties to use this creatively to push their messages out in their campaign and then make sure there is a peaceful environment to hold the credible election."
The Ambassador made the remarks to the journalists after a meeting with Foreign Affairs Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury at the Foreign Ministry in the city Wednesday.
Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury and James F Moriarty discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues.
They reportedly assessed the bilateral relations to be on a 'very sound footing' and expressed the hope that this would 'continue into the future when new governments assume office in both countries,' a foreign ministry release said.
