US labour activist commends BEPZA

Workers invest through their labour as like as entrepreneurs invest their money. As such workers should get their proper wage too.
This was spelled out by Executive Director Ellie Kiel Larson of American Federation of Labour and Congress of Industrial Organisations (AFL-CIO) at a meeting with Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) Executive Chairman Jamil Ahmed Khan at Dhaka EPZ Sunday.
The executive chairman briefed her about investment, export and working environment of BEPZA.
Larson discussed with the BEPZA chief labour issues and the framework of WA (Workers Association) in EPZ.
He informed the US labour activist of the function of WA in detail. He has also narrated the success of the EPZ, which lies in the congenial relationship between the workers and the owners, and the excellent production environment.
The AFL-CIO representative expressed her satisfaction at the activities of BEPZA particularly on workers' rights.
The representative also visited Paxar (BD) Ltd and Valox Fashion Ltd and observed the ongoing referendum and election process.
She expressed her satisfaction at the congenial election environment.
Out of total 281 eligible industries, 64 per cent units completed the election. At DEPZ alone in 44 per cent enterprises workers associations (WA) have already been formed.
A total of 75,979 workers are employed in 96 factories at Dhaka EPZ.
