USA remained the largest buyer of Bangladeshi products in the last fiscal year accounting for 26 per cent of the country's total export earnings.
Germany was the second largest importer of Bangladeshi products and the largest in Europe with earnings registering an increase of 4.32 per cent at the end of FY 2008-09 from previous fiscal, data published by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) revealed recently.
Bangladesh's total export worth US$ 4.05 billion to the US in FY 2008-09 was an increase by 12.85 per cent from the previous fiscal, the data showed.
Export earnings from Germany totalled US$ 2.27 billion in fiscal year 2008-09 against US$ 2.17 billion in FY 2007-08.
According to EPB's country-wise export performance in FY 2008-09, export earnings from Europe increased by 10.02 per cent and Middle Eastern countries by 15.18 per cent compared to the previous fiscal, the data revealed.
"Readymade Garments (RMG) accounted for 91.14 per cent of total Bangladeshi export to USA while exports of frozen food and jute goods contributed significantly," an EPB official told the FE.
The USA consumed country's 46.19 per cent of total woven garments export, the official explained adding that 14.92 per cent knitwear was exported to the United States in FY 2008-09.
"Though we missed the RMG export target to USA last year due to global economic recession, we managed to secure our leading position in apparel exports," the EPB officer commented.
Frozen food exports to the USA from Bangladesh also witnessed a good momentum during last fiscal, securing 26.28 per cent of the country's total export earnings, the official added.
Bangladesh's exports surged 10.3 percent to $15.56 billion in 2008-09 fiscal year, the lowest growth rate in six years, resulting from the global economic slump.
