US sail past players\\\' unrest-hit Ghana

Tuesday, 17 June 2014

United States defeated Ghana 2-1 in their World Cup Group G match in Natal, Brazil, on Monday. Ghana were stunned after just 30 seconds when US striker Clint Dempsey finished off a great move down the left by weaving through the west African team’s defence to beat Adam Kwarasey at the keeper’s far post. Andre Ayew struck an 82nd minute equaliser for the Black Stars (Ghana) but only four minutes later second-half substitute John Brooks headed a late corner through the defence and past Kwarasey to send a large number of US supporters at Estadio das Dunas stadium wild. Ghana, quarter-finalists in 2010 World Cup football finals, now face a huge task to qualify from Group G which includes Germany and Portugal. Earlier, Germany thumped Portugal 4-0. Kwesi Appiah, the first Ghanaian to coach the side at the World Cup, admitted Ghana’s players had not received all of their bonuses. But he played down suggestions -- spread by social media -- there was unrest in the camp. After the match Ghanaians blamed that coach Kwesi Appiah denied his players’ performance in the 2-1 defeat to the United States. Ghana’s national football team was hit by players unrest over pay before the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, according to AFP.
