Tuesday, 18 November 2008

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) relating to bilateral cooperation between the US and Bangladesh was signed Monday to prevent illicit trafficking in nuclear and other radioactive materials, Economic Relations Division (ERD) sources said, reports BSS.
ERD Secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan and US Ambassador to Bangladesh signed the MoU at NEC Bhaban at Sher-E-Banglanagar on behalf of their respective sides. The US will provide US$ 15 million as grant to Bangladesh for the purpose of equipment and materials as well as training and services to detect and deter illicit trafficking of special nuclear and other radioactive materials through entry and exit points, especially at Chittagong port.
"Considering Bangladesh's strategic South Asian location, this agreement is a major step forward in preventing nuclear materials from being smuggled through maritime cargo container traffic," said a press release of the US embassy in Dhaka, quoting its National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
It said, NNSA appreciates Bangladesh's willingness to cooperate with US in this mission.
Established by Congress in 2000, NNSA is a separately organized agency within the US Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science.
