US, UK assure intelligence aid in probing BDR tragedy

Tuesday, 3 March 2009

The United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) have assured FBI and Scotland Yard's help in investigating the BDR carnage, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said Monday, reports UNB.

US Ambassador James Moriarty and British High Commissioner Stephen Evans gave the assurances separately during meetings with the foreign minister, six days into the search for the perpetrators and the bodies of the army officers killed in the revolt led by some BDR malcontents.

"We've sought assistance from different countries. We've got positive response from the USA and the UK. We have sought assistance for forensic investigation," Dipu told reporters after the meeting with the US envoy at the foreign ministry.

Moriarty told the reporters that the foreign minister sought the support to the ongoing investigations and he assured that he would do his best. He would pass on the formal request to Washington.

Asked about the modality of the assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), he said it was too early to say.

The American diplomat expressed the hope that the democratic forces in Bangladesh would stay united at the time of this tragedy.

Dipu in a similar meeting with Evans in parliament Sunday night sought assistance of the Scotland Yard.

Earlier on Sunday, US Assistant Secretary for South Asia Richard Boucher had telephone conversation with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when Boucher offered US assistance for the probe to break the case.

Hasina told parliament Sunday that, apart from help from the two powerful investigation agencies of the USA and the UK, the government would also seek assistance from the United Nations (UN) in investigating the BRD mutiny.
