USD 10.987b earned as remittance in 2009-10 fiscal, Muhith tells JS

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith Tuesday told the House that the country fetched over US dollar 10.987 billion as remittance in 2009-10 financial year, reports BSS.
The remittance sent by the expatriates during the period was about US dollar 1.3 billion (13.8 per cent) more than the previous year's 9.689 billion dollar, he said in a written reply to a query from BNP lawmaker Md Harunur Rashid.
In reply to another query from treasury bench lawmaker Md Israfil Alam, the finance minister said a total of Tk 9.23 billion (922.90 crore) was invested from the undisclosed earnings in the country during the last financial year. "The government allowed disclosure of undisclosed earnings in four sectors during the last fiscal year," he said.
Muhith told the House that the said investment was made in three sectors - setting up new industries, renovation, modernization and repairing of old industries, and buying shares of listed companies. "But no investment was made in buying flats and houses under the opportunity offered as per the income tax act," he said.

Abdul Latif, the finance minister said the government has no plan at present to formulate separate bank company acts for general banking and Islamic banking. But the Bangladesh Bank has recently issued the guidelines for Islamic Banking on Islamic banking, he said.
Replying to another query, Muhith said four more branches of Sonali Bank would be set up at Court Building in Chuadanga, Nalin Bazar in Tangail, Mukterpur in Munshiganj and Burimari in Lalmonirhat. At present, the bank has 1185 branches in the country, he added.
Replying to another query from lawmaker from women seat Syeda Ashifa Ashrafi Papiya, the finance minister said the number of money exchanging companies in the country at present is 239.
