Use electricity prudently: President, PM

The National Power Week 2014 is being observed in the country on Thursday. President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon all to be prudent in using electricity. In separate messages, they wished success of all programmes of National Power Week-2014. The President, in his message, hoped that observance of the week would encourage all to be prudent in using electricity considering the future energy security. He said the government has given priority to power sector and undertaken programmes for setting up power stations and distribution and transmission of electricity. Therefore, the country's power generation capacity has increased to 11,265 megawatts, he added. In her message, PM Hasina said the power sector was in a bad shape when the AL government assumed office in 2009. Then her government took short-term- midterm and long-term programmes and succeeded in increasing power generation capacity to 10,000mw by December 2013 as per the election manifesto, she added. The country's power sector has got a strong footing now as her government took and implemented pragmatic plans, the PM said, according to a news agency.
