UZ vice chairmen demands their empowerment

Upazila vice-chairmen, at a seminar, demanded their empowerment according to the Constitution and urged the ruling party to remember their election manifesto where they made oath to eastablish an active and strong local government system.
Bangladesh Upazila vice-chairman Shamannay Pari-shad organised the seminar titled "Empowerment of Vice-chairmen according to the Constitution" at the National Press Club Auditorium Monday.
The Parishad members revealed that although one and a half years have passed since they were elected but there is no sign of empowering them for which it has become difficult for them to address public grievances.
"According to our Constitution, the foundation of our power and administration is local government, but the ruling party is not showing their responsibilities towards the constitution." said Md. Golam Rabbani, former Justice of the Supreme Court while addressing the discussion as chief guest.
"The government instead is imposing bureaucracy upon upazila parishad, but the public has given us the mandate and they must face it" said Mrs Daulat Jahan, vice-chairman, Nilphamari Upazilla Parishad.
Md. Jahangir Alam, president, Bangladesh upazila Vice-chairman Shamannay Parishad, said in his speech that the government is making decisions according to the constitution and we must get our rights according to the constitution as well.
Advocate Sultana Kamal, former advisor to caretaker government, Abdul Matin Khasru MP, AKM Mozammel Haque MP, Dr Tofael Ahmed, advisor to UNDP on local government, Dr Badiul Alam Majumder, general secretary, SHUJON, Bangladesh were among the special guests.
