Vaccination trial begins today

Before starting a mass Covid-19 inoculation programme for school students, the government will open a trial run of the special vaccination campaign in Manikganj today (Thursday).
Some 100 students of two government educational institutions will be given Pfizer-Biontech vaccine at Colonel Malek Medical College Hospital in the district town from 12 noon, said Prof Dr ABM Khurshid Alam, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), on Wednesday.
"We will observe the inoculated students for 10-14 days and will decide the course of action based on the test run's outcome," he said.
If everything goes well, mass scale inoculation of the students aged 12-17 years will kick off in Dhaka, Dr Alam added.
According to the DGHS, Pfizer vaccine will be provided in 19 districts where vaccine doses have already been sent.
Initially, the districts where Pfizer vaccine will be provided are Barishal, Bhola, Jhalakathi, Chattogram, Chandpur, Cumilla, Laxmipur, Noakhali, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Tangail, Jessore, Satkhira, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sunamganj, Sylhet and Habiganj.
Meanwhile, a total of 518 more people tested Covid-19 positive in the last 24 hours till Wednesday morning.
With the latest infections, the entire tally of confirmed cases of the viral disease rose to 15,64,019, according to the DGHS.
A total of 22,153 samples were tested during the 24-hour period and the infection rate is 2.34 per cent.
With this, the daily test positivity rate has stayed below 5 per cent for 23 consecutive days while the overall infection rate in the country stands at 15.61 per cent.
In terms of daily fatalities, the country recorded 17 more deaths and it took the death toll to 27,730.
At the same time, some 505 people recovered from the respiratory disease caused by the virus.
With the latest figures, a total of 15,25,673 people have so far recovered from the infection.
