Various organisations continue relief operation for flood victims

A number of organisations, including Australian High Commission, WFP, UNICEF, BRAC University, HeidelbergCement Bangladesh Limited and The Oriental Bank Limited, are continuing their relief assistance programme for helping the country's flood-affected people.
Australian High Commission: Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer has announced that Australia would provide Aus$1.6 million as immediate humanitarian assistance to the country's flood-affected people.
Mentioning that the World Food Programme (WFP) has already distributed 142 tonnes of high energy biscuits, funded by Australia worth Aus$1,06,000, he said, a further assistance of Aus$1.5 million will be made available to the WFP to support its relief and recovery activities.
Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Douglas Foskett said, the humanitarian assistance reflected the ongoing close bilateral relations between the two countries.
Australia has provided assistance to Bangladesh in response to natural emergencies in the past, and remained strongly committed to supporting the people of Bangladesh, particularly during such difficult times, he added.
WFP, UNICEF: WFP and UNICEF continue to dispatch food aid and emergency assistance to some of the worst affected districts of the country. The two UN organisations distributed food to the flood victims in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Sirajganj, Jamalpur and Manikganj last week.
They started the second round of their food distribution to assist about 1,23,000 flood-affected people in four central districts and two northern districts from Sunday.
The WFP and UNICEF-supplied biscuits are being distributed in Faridpur, Rajbari, Shariatpur, Magura, Sirajganj and Tangail districts.

HeidelbergCement Bangladesh Limited (HCBL) management has already finalised and started several projects such as donating Tk 1.0 million to the Chief Adviser's fund, and distributing food and setting up free medical camps in some of the badly affected areas, including Manikganj, Sirajganj and Demra.
HCBL has started its relief operation for the flood-affected people from August 8. HCBL team, with the help of the local task force, upazila chairmen and union parishad members, has traveled to various locations of Savar and Manikganj. Besides, HCBL has also distributed relief materials to the remote areas of Sirajganj, Ullapara and Kazipur.
BRAC University, BRAC, BRAC Bank : The staff and faculty members of BRAC University (BU) Sunday donated their one-day's salary, amounting to Tk 1,52,000, to the BRAC flood relief programme. BU Vice Chancellor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury handed over the cheque to BU Government Board President Fazle Hasan Abed.
BU Master of Public Health Dean AMR Chowdhury, Business School Dean Iftekher Ghani Chowdhury, Treasurer SK Sarkar, Registrar Mahmood Hassan and Head of Accounts Monojit Kumar were also present on the occasion.
Besides, the staffs of BRAC and BRAC Bank have contributed their one-day's salary to BRAC flood relief operations.
BRAC has already committed Tk 50 million from its own resources, and expects to mobilise voluntary support of an additional Tk 150 million for flood relief operation.
A 24-hour control room has been set up at the BRAC headquarters at BRAC centre in Mohakhali to coordinate flood relief activities across the country.
Oriental Bank Limited: The employees of The Oriental Bank Limited have donated their one-day's salary, amounting to Tk 1,66,535, to the Chief Adviser's relief and welfare fund as a token of their participation in mitigating the suffering of the country's flood-affected people.
