President Zillur Rahman has called upon the university graduates to establish themselves in their career through self-employment after obtaining higher education.
The President gave the call while addressing the second convocation of State University of Bangladesh (SUB) at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city Monday, reports UNB.
Minister for Education Nurul Islam Nahid attended the convocation as the special guest, while eminent educationist Professor emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman was the convocation speaker.
Mr Rahman said that after obtaining higher education, many people in the country have established themselves in life through self-employment.
"You can choose the same path following those successful people to build a bright future", he said.
He said: "I think education curricula of the universities will have to be redesigned to suit the needs of the time," he added.
The President mentioned that many socio-economic problems in Bangladesh and other developing countries were due to ignorance, superstition and religious bigotry and asked the new graduates to seek a way out by going deep into the roots of the problems.
The education minister said the government has taken the initiative to expand science education in the country. "It's a matter of concern that the students' interest in learning science is gradually decreasing in the country."
SUB Vice-chancellor Prof Iftekhar Ghoni Chowdhury and its board of trustees chairman Dr MA Shameem also spoke on the occasion.
A total of 1,625 graduates have been conferred degrees at the convocation, while three students-Istiaque Ahmed, Farzana Huq and Khondoker Ali Asgor Pavel-received gold medals from the President for their outstanding academic results.
