CHITTAGONG, Sept 25: Due to non-availability of adequate agricultural inputs and easy loan facilities, vast areas of cultivable land in the hilly region are left uncultivated every year, according to a recent survey.
The survey has revealed that as thousands of acres of land in the hilly region are not cultivated, there has been a negative impact on production of agricultural goods.
The extent of non-arable land is on the rise gradually on one hand, and bushes and shrubs are also increasing on the otherhand.
Moreover, due to administrative bottlenecks and harassment, entrepreneurs are losing interest in making gardens under personal initiatives.
According to the DAE, the tendency of cultivating 'jhoom' in the hilly region is also declining and major portion of land is now left abandoned.
Concerned people have feared that an adverse impact on the agricultural sector is likely to be witnessed in the hilly region in future as vast areas of uncultivated land are left abandoned.
It the circumstances, if spicy items including ginger, turmeric, chilli etc are cultivated in those lands, it would be possible to meet the local demand of commodities as well as that of the entire country, they observed.
