RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Mar 24: About one hundred illegal structures and shops have been built on the Rajshahi University (RU) campus. These have been build in Amtala area and all around different halls on the campus.
Though the university authorities allowed temporary structures on humanitarian ground, these have created many problems. Even the occupants are building new structures and renting them to other employees.
They are taking large sums from the new employees for providing them shelter on the campus, sources said. As a result, the university is losing huge amount in land revenue.
Some employees of the varsity are occupying more than the actual permitted land and constructing additional structures. Actually they are paying rent only for 30 sq feet at Tk 5 per sq feet, said the head of estate office of RU Md Jahidur Rahman.
The university has a total of 748.96 acres of land, but most of it is occupied by some unauthorised persons.
About 16 acres of land on the western side of the main campus boundary at Jamalpur mouja area is occupied by musclemen, who established a "Mazar" for the last 22 years. RU authorities have twice taken initiatives to evict them from this land but failed.
