Vast tracts of land remain uncultivated due to water-logging

BAGERHAT, Dec 19 (UNB): Highly vulnerable to the havoc of global climate change, Bagerhat district has fallen victim to the adverse effects of water-logging, forcing farmers to keep vast tracts of land uncultivated.
People of the district have been suffering from water-logging since their river-beds filled up with silt resulting in cessation of regular crop and fish cultivation.
A total of about 62,000 bighas in all the nine upazilas of the district remained uncultivated due to permanent water-logging.
Of the total waterlogged land, 15,750 bighas are in Sadar Upazila, 17,775 bighas in Mullahat, 16,875 bighas in Rampal, 788 bighas in Fakirhat, 1,875 bighas in Morelganj, 3,900 bighas in Sharankhola, 3,000 bighas in Mongla, 937 bighas in Chitalmari and 500 bighas in Kachua Upazila.
