Veg, edible oil prices show dramatic rise

Prices of vegetable and loose edible oil increased significantly on Friday.
Onion prices witnessed a surge while ginger prices decreased slightly on the day, traders said.
Loose soybean oil increased to Tk 114-115 per litre, super palm oil Tk 90-92 per litre, normal palm oil Tk 84-86 on Friday-Tk 6-8 increase per litre in the last seven days, retailers at the city's key kitchen markets said.
"We bought per litre soybean at Tk102-103 seven days back which is Tk112-113 per litre at Moulovibazar wholesale market now," Ainul Hoque, a retailer at Nowabgabnjbazar in the city, said.
He said: "We were told by the traders that prices of the essentials had increased at mill-gates due to supply shortage caused by hot weather."
Onion prices increased by Tk4-6 per kg on the day compared to that of its previous. Local variety was sold at Tk30-32 and Indian variety at Tk24-25 per kg on the day.
Chilli price increased by Tk10 per kg and was selling at Tk 55-60 per kg on the day.
Imported ginger almost disappeared while local ginger price went down slightly and was selling at Tk180-200 per kg at different kitchen markets.
However, ginger price has witnessed an all-time high in the country due to increase in global price, importers said.
Prices of most of vegetable items increased by Tk 5-10 per kg in the last seven days.
Okra, pointed gourd, snake gourd, long bean, brinjal, moringa were sold at Tk 40, Tk40-42, Tk35-36, Tk50, Tk50 and Tk60 per kg respectively.
Radish and Papaya, two cheaper vegetables, also surged by Tk5-6 per kg and were sold at Tk20, Tk25 per kg respectively on the day.
Rice prices were stable maintaining the higher prices. Shwarna variety sold at Tk36-38 and Miniket at Tk48-54 per kg on Friday.
Prices of other major commodities including meats, fish, milk (excluding powdered milk), pulses, sugar, salt, flour, spices (excluding onion, ginger and chilli), tea etc were stable last week compared with a week ago.
