Vegetables get cheaper, Hilshas dearer in city markets

Prices of winter vegetables, sweet water fishes, lentil, garlic, onion, rice and sugar saw a downward trend in the city markets last week, though Hilsha prices went up further, market sources said.
Prices of different kinds of vegetables went down as they were aplenty in the city's kitchen markets. On Friday, some vegetables including okra were selling at Tk 26-28, down from Tk 40 per kg and brinjal was steady at Tk 20-24 per kg.
Green chili increased to Tk 45 from Tk 40 per kg. The price of snake gourd was Tk 26.
The prices of tomato and cucumber were steady at Tk 60 and Tk 35-40 per kg respectively. Carrot was selling at Tk 36, down sharply from Tk 60 per kg.
The price of potal was Tk 30 per kg. Papaya prices declined to Tk 10 from Tk 12 per kg on an average. Bitter gourd was priced at Tk 12-15 against Tk 32 per kg previously while radish was selling at Tk 10 per kg.
The price of a small-size cauliflower fell to Tk 15 from Tk 20-Tk 30, a small-size cabbage fell to Tk 10 from Tk 30. A medium-size gourd was selling at Tk 20-Tk 25 against Tk 30-Tk 40 previously while bean was selling at Tk 25 against Tk 80 per kg.
Prices of different brands of edible oil saw an upward trend while the non-brand edible oil went the opposite way. Rupchanda in five-litre can was selling at Tk 425, slightly up from the earlier price of Tk 420. Teer was selling at Tk 405 against Tk 406 on an average.
But non-brand edible oil such as palm oil, super palm and soybean declined to Tk 65-72 per litre from Tk 85-Tk 90 previously.
Traders said the retail prices of local lentil fell in the city markets. On Friday, a kilo of local lentil was sold at Tk 110 against the previous week's price of Tk 118.
The imported Indian, Nepalese and Turkish varieties were selling at Tk 95-100 per kg.
In the city's retail market the imported garlic was selling at Tk 80, down from Tk 90 while the local garlic rose to Tk 115 from the earlier price of Tk 110 per kg.
Both the local ginger and the imported Chinese variety were priced at Tk 75-80, down from the previous rate of Tk 85- 95 per kg.
The prices of brand and non-brand sugar were down to Tk 48-52 a kg from Tk 56 at the retail level in the capital.
However, the Hilsha fish prices were up in the city's retail market. A pair of medium-size Hilshas were selling at Tk 1000-1100, up from the last week's Tk 700-Tk 800. But shrimp prices decreased to Tk 320-400 per kg from Tk 450 a week ago.
Kachki and Telapia fishes were selling at Tk 80-100 on an average.
Ruhi was selling at Tk 150-180 a kg against the previous price of Tk 250 and pangas was steady with Tk 90-100 per kg.
Katla was selling at Tk 160, down from Tk 220, poya Tk 180 from Tk 200 per kg. Other local fishes like puti were selling at Tk 120-150, tengra Tk 150 and local magur Tk 500-600 on an average in the city kitchen markets.
On the other hand, the price of the imported Indian onion decreased to Tk 36 from the previous week's Tk 38 per kg. But there was a scarcity of local onion and the item was steady at Tk 46 per kg.
Besides, potato was selling at Tk 26 against the previous rate of Tk 30 per kg.
The price of every four local eggs was Tk 32 while every four farm eggs were selling at Tk 27-28.
According to retailers in different rice markets in the city, the 'minicate' rice dropped to Tk 31-33 from Tk 36-Tk 38 and 'Nazirshail' fell to Tk 34-41 from Tk 40- Tk 46 per kg on an average.
The coarse varieties of rice including BR-28 were selling at Tk 26 per kg. Pari was selling at Tk 25-26 against the previous rate of Tk 28, Swarna fell to Tk 26 from Tk 28 and Paijam to Tk 25 from Tk 29 per kg on an average.
Poultry birds were priced at Tk 100-110 per kg, a kilogramme of beef Tk 230 and mutton Tk 320-Tk 350 at the city's retail outlets.
