Vegetables prices up

Prices of some vegetables increased significantly in the city's kitchen markets in the past seven days.
Most vegetables were sold at Tk 25 per kilogram, up by Tk 5.0, in the past one week. Wholesalers and retailers blamed supply disruption due to rains for the rise in vegetable prices.
Eggplants, lady's finger, green chili, korola jumped up at retail markets were now sold at Tk 44-48, Tk 34-36, Tk 70-72, Tk 46-48 against Tk 30-35, Tk 20-22, Tk 46- 48,Tk 30-35 respectively per kg at New Market, Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Nawabganj Bazar in the city.
Prices of Potato, onion, potol, papya, borboty (been) and pumpkin also increased by Tk 3-4 at per kg.
Traders, however, said the prices of these vegetables were reasonable at different parts of the country.
Lady's finger, eggplants, korola, potol, onion were sold at Tk 16-24, Tk 24 -26,Tk18-24, Tk12-18 and Tk 18-20 respectively at Rangpur, Dinajpur, Jessore, Comilla while only chili saw a hike and sold at Tk 45-65 according to retailers and traders in those areas.
Ashfak Ali, a retailer at New Market kitchen marker in the capital, told the FE Tuesday that prices of those items have been increased at wholesale level, which the retail market.
Anwar Hossain Badal, a wholesaler at Karwan Bazar, said Wednesday that the prices increased due a short supply. "Traders at the remote areas have increased the prices citing production shortfall due to rain as the main reason," he said.
