Vehicles go off to skip fitness drive

Daily travel is getting tougher for commuters in capital Dhaka with public transport thinning out due to the BRTA’s continuing drive against unfit vehicles.
Fines and arrests drove ageing buses off the road Monday, aggravating commuters’ hardship, so much so that the road transport minister regretted the crisis.
On Tuesday, mobile courts were stationed at Shyaora on the Airport Road, Shyamali Mirpur Road, and Babubazar Bridge in Old Dhaka.
As a result, private buses avoided these routes, leaving commuters stranded for hours.
The drive at the Shyaora bus stand area, led by BRTA Executive Magistrate Abul Bashar, lasted nearly three hours.
“My court has registered 35 cases, the fine collected amounts to Tk 26,200, and one vehicle has been dumped,” Bashar told bdnews24.com.
