Venezuela to attend Jeddah oil summit

Sunday, 22 June 2008

CARACAS, June 21 (AFP): Venezuela will attend Sunday's summit between oil producers and consumers being held in Saudi Arabia, energy ministry sources said yesterday.

Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez changed his mind and will attend the Jeddah summit, reversing a decision announced Thursday that he would not go, a ministry source told AFP.

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest producer and key player in OPEC, called the Jeddah meeting in the hope of easing the strains caused by soaring oil prices which hit record highs just short of 140 dollars earlier this week.

Ramirez recently said he would make Venezuela's case for holding Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) output unchanged at the oil cartel's next scheduled meeting in September.
