Venus Williams through to last 16

Monday, 30 June 2008

LONDON, June 29 (AFP): Four-time champion Venus Williams was too strong for Spanish opponent Maria Jose Martinez Saturday as she moved into the last 16 at Wimbledon with a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

The reigning champion and seventh seed will face Russia's Alisa Kleybanova for a place in the quarter-finals.

Williams cruised through a ridiculously one-sided first set before the Spaniard put up a fight in the second as the American struggled with her serve, producing six double faults in the match.
