RAJSHAHI, Sept 27: The traditional food vermicelli, an essential item during Eid-ul-Fitr, might be out of reach of the common people this year because of reckless price hike of flour.
Last year, vermicelli was being sold at Tk 38 per kg while this year it is being sold at Tk 72 per kg in the markets of Rajshahi.
Market sources said, if the prices of wheat and edible oil rise once again before the Eid, the price of vermicelli will go even higher. Sources said, in the span of just ten days, the price of flour has jumped by Tk 200 per sack of 74 kg.
Ali Ahmed, a laccha vermicelli trader said, 10 days ago the price of a sack of Dolphin-brand flour was Tk 2,200 but now it is Tk 2,400. For this reason, the cost of manufacturing of laccha vermicelli went up to Tk 72.22 per kilogram. On the other hand, the price of packaged vermicelli has not risen as much as the loose ones. The cause for this is being explained as discrepancy in weight and quality.
A grocer of Mita store of Saheb Bazar told the Financial Express that Bonoful laccha vermicelli which was sold at Tk 17-18 per package last year is now being sold at Tk 22.
People of the lower income group who are fasting have expressed their concern over the abnormal increase in the price of flour as well as vermicelli.
