Veteran journalist Alamgir Mohiuddin passes away

Veteran journalist and former editor of the Daily Naya Diganta, Alamgir Mohiuddin, passed away in Dhaka on Saturday. He was 83.
He breathed his last around 1:30pm while undergoing treatment at Anwar Khan Modern Medical College Hospital in the capital, family sources said.

Alamgir Mohiuddin had been admitted to the hospital first on May 30 after falling ill at home.
Although he showed signs of recovery and was discharged, his condition deteriorated again last week, leading to his readmission.
Doctors said he had been suffering from multiple health complications, including urinary problems, breathing difficulties and fluctuating blood pressure.
Born in Natore, Mohiuddin studied English at Rajshahi University. He began his journalism career shortly after the independence, serving as a senior reporter at the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
He later worked as editor of the New Nation and news editor of Bangladesh Times, before taking on a key editorial role at the Daily Naya Diganta.
At the time of his death, he was a member of the BSS Board of Directors.
He is survived by two daughters. His wife predeceased him four years ago.
His namaz-e-janaza was held after Maghrib prayers at the Krishi Laboratories Mosque in Monipuri Para, followed by burial at the Rayerbazar Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard.
Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam expressed shock at his death, describing him as a journalist who practised objective reporting with courage.
In a message of condolence, the adviser said Alamgir Mohiuddin did objective journalism with courage. His contribution to the country's mass media would be remembered forever.
Mahfuj said his death was an irreparable loss for the country's media sector.
The adviser prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
The Editors' Council, of which he was a founding member, expressed deep sorrow and conveyed condolences. Mr Mahfuz Anam, President, and Dewan Hanif Mahmud, General Secretary of the Editors' Council in a statement condoled the death of Alamgir Mohiuddin. They extended sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for the salvation of the departed soul. The Jatiya Press Club also mourned his passing.
Chairman of the BSS Board of Directors Anwar Aldin, and the agency's Managing Director and Chief Editor Mahbub Morshed, issued condolence messages as well.
