Achintya Sen, a veteran journalist and senior member of Jatiya Press Club, died Tuesday at the age of 64 at Labaid Hospital in the city. He has been suffering from kidney- and lung-related diseases for long. He began his professional career, immediately after independence of Bangladesh, with the now-defunct The Bangladesh Observer. He later joined the weekly Holiday and worked there for a long period of his professional career. He joined The Financial Express (FE) at its inception as its Executive Editor for a brief period, before he resigned on health grounds. He did not work as a regular staffer with any other newspaper after that. He contributed articles to different dailies, including the FE, and also other weeklies. Achintya Sen was an excellent professional hand and a prolific writer. He had a sharp analytical mind, having the rare qualities of making in-depth comments and analyses on political and socio-economic issues, national events and contemporary and international topics. He had a brilliant academic career and was closely involved in left student politics in the sixties. Amiable and soft-spoken, he endeared himself to all his colleagues, friends and well-wishers. His wife, Dipa Sen Gupta, was also an activist in student politics in the sixties. Achintya Sen left behind his wife, three brothers, one sister and a host of admirers and friends to mourn his death. His father was a renowned advocate in Sylhet. His body was taken to Jatiya Press Club where his professional colleagues and friends paid respects to his memory. Later, the body was taken to Sylhet for cremation. Meanwhile, the managing committee of Jatiya Press Club expressed its deep shock over the demise of Achintya Sen. Kamala Uddin Sabuj and Syed Abdal Ahmed, president and general secretary of the Jatiya Press Club respectively in a statement, condoled the death of Achintya Sen. They also expressed their sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
