Vietnam to export 4.5m tonnes of rice in 2008

HANOI, Dec 17 (Xinhua): Vietnam is expected to export 4.5 million tonnes of rice next year, compared with estimated 4.53 million tonnes this year, local newspaper Youth reported today.
Export prices of the local commodity will stand high next year, at 320 U.S. dollars upwards for a tonne of the 25-percent broken rice, and 340 dollars upwards for the 5-per cent one, said Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association.
Vietnam's paddy rice output is estimated at 35.9 million tonnes in 2007, equaling to 2006, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Vietnam, the world's second largest rice exporter, earned over 1.44 billion dollars from shipping abroad 4.47 million tonnes of rice in the first 11 months of this year, up 14 per cent in value, but down 3.4 percent in volume over the same period last year.
