NILPHAMARI, Aug 09: Most of the village markets of the district particularly those demolished recently by the joint forces for illegal possession are in very miserable condition.
Many shops are functioning under the open sky. The suffering of shopkeepers becomes worst during the rainy season.
There are 133 haats and bazars in the district. Of them 23 are in Domar Upazila, 14 in Dimla Upazila, 29 in Jaldhaka Upazila, 23 in Kishoreganj Upazila, 09 in Saidpur Upazila and 35 in Sadar Upazila.
Population in the district increased gradually but expansion and development of huts and bazars has not been done at all.
No effective measures have been taken to collect tolls as per government rate.
In this rainy season, entire haat areas have become muddy and slippery. There is an acute shortage of accommodation, hampering the movement of the buyers and sellers.
Makeshift shops occupy roadsides causing hazard to the people.
Residents have demanded immediate redress of these problems.
