KURIGRAM, Nov 7: The people of Khelarvita village under Berubari union of Nageswari Upazila in the district took it upon themselves to save their houses and property from erosion of the river Dudkumar.
These villagers collected some 1100 bamboos, 2,700 sacks of sand, a large number of trees and spent Tk 65 thousand in cash for the purpose. With no assistance of the administration they used the money and material to construct 12 bamboo pilings to offset the erosion. They still need more pilings to save their villages from erosion.
The river erosion took a serious turn in mid-August when about 1.5 km of the eastern side of the Dudkumar river was washed away.
When CID Inspector Nurul Islam (42) who is stationed in Dhaka heard of the impending disaster he rushed home to Khelarvita village. There, he along with others conferred and then got to work under his leadership.
When this correspondent visited the spot on Saturday, Nurul Islam said that about a hundred people were working voluntarily daily. He said that although the work was going on it may stop any time due to fund crisis. If they failed to put up the rest of the pilings in time then the villages might be devoured by the river.
