Various human rights organisations formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the city Sunday in protest against violence against women particularly on college student Hawa Akter by her husband, recently.
Rafiqul Islam dismembered his wife Hawa Akter's right hand because she continued to study despite his objection.
Steps Towards Development (STEP) organised the protest where Ain O Shalish Kendra, Bangladesh Mahila Parisad, BARCIK, BAWSI, CAMPE, Gender and Development Alliance, Hitoishi Bangladesh, Manusher Jonno Foundation, among others, participated.
Human rights activist Hameeda Hossain, ActionAid Country Director Farah Kabir, human rights lawyer Barrister Sara Hossain, Selima Ahmed of Bangladesh Women Chamber, Mahmuda Khan of USAID, Tapati Saha of PLAGE-II, Serajud Dahar Khan of Interaction addressed the occasion expressing solidarity with the cause.
Speakers at the human chain demanded exemplary punishment of Jui's husband and all other perpetrators who made cruel attacks on women. They also demanded special medical treatment for the victims and security of their family members.
They also urged every conscious citizen to stand up against the incident and raise their voice to protest all kinds of cruelty and violence against women.
