FE REPORT | Tuesday, 29 September 2020

With 1,407 new cases, the tally of Covid-19 confirmed cases crossed more than 0.36 million in Bangladesh, according to the health directorate.
Now, the overall number of infections reached 360,555 from 1,921,382 samples tested so far here.
Bangladesh is the 15th worst-affected country in the world in terms of the number of positive cases.
Simultaneously, the death toll continued to rise as 32 more patients succumbed to the respiratory disease caused by the virus, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
With the latest fatalities, the number of deaths stood at 5,193 as of September 28, the DGHS data showed.
For a spike in deaths, the fatality rate rose to 1.44 per cent among conformed cases recorded so far in the densely populated nation of around 165-million people.
Although the number of infections has kept falling in recent weeks, the rate is still above the danger level, according to healthcare professionals.
The result is obvious: vacancy in the dedicated hospitals keeps widening gradually as around 80 per cent of hospital beds remain empty. Official figures show there were 11,605 dedicated beds for corona cases countrywide as of September 28, but only 2,619 of them were occupied by patients.
And the number of empty beds has been increasing fast because of a sharp rise in the number of recovered persons.
The tally has now reached 27,2073.
