NILPHAMARI, Oct 14: Various diseases including a kind of virus engulfed ginger crop in Nilphamari district. It is a routine phenomenon that ginger crop becomes vulnerable to various diseases every year particularly at the end of the rainy season.
In this year also the traditional spice of Nilphamari district is facing the same problem. Sources said Nilphamari used to meet the entire need of ginger of the country in the past. But various diseases and virus reduced its production substantially. DAE sources said this year ginger was cultivated in 1759 hectares of land to produce 15729 metric tonnes ginger.
Sources added if virus free and high yield variety seed could be provided and used per hectare production of ginger would have been trebled as the soil of Nilphamari is ginger-friendly. At present Nilphamari district produces more than 50 per cent of total ginger production of the country. HYV ginger seeds is a long standing demand of ginger growers of the region.
