WHILE visiting Japan some 12 years back, I had the opportunity to visit the parliamentary building in Tokyo. I was very delighted to see the aesthetic beauty of the internal and external structure of the building. While leaving the premises, I found some buses standing near the building. I saw school students getting down from them. They came to visit the parliamentary building. Upon query, I came to know such a visit is very common by school students in Japan.
Visiting various important organisations of the country is important for students as far as their mental growth is concerned. They can see for themselves what they have come to know from books and what they have heard from their teachers and parents.
Such visits will help the students gain knowledge about working pattern of different professionals. They need to see the environment of that particular profession. They also should be given the opportunity to mix with the people of that profession so that they can have better ideas about that profession.
Without the real knowledge, students have very vague idea about any particular profession. This often lead them to choose the wrong profession which they do not like in their later life.
If an institute thinks that it cannot take all the students of a class to the same organisation, they can divide them in groups and different groups can be taken to different organisations. These students can later share their experience of visiting some place which was not visited by other groups.
If schools or colleges cannot mange the visits of students to different offices, at least officials from those organisations can be invited and requested to deliver speech to the students. After the speech session, students can also take part in question and answer sessions and satisfy their queries.
It is only through such visits or interaction with professionals from different sectors, students can have idea about career and can be more serious in reaching their career destinations. They can also become confident about their future.
Just a matter of little initiative by the school or college management and the co-operation from the authorities of various organisations can be helpful to guide our next generation.
