Front and associate organisations of the opposition BNP protested Tuesday the government restriction on entry of some distinguished personalities into the Dhaka Cantonment residence of the party's Chairperson Khaleda Zia on the Eid day, reports UNB.
In separate statements, president and general secretary of Sramik Dal Nazrul Islam Khan and Jafrul Hasan Chowdhury, Jubo Dal president Barkatullah Bulu MP and general-secretary Moazzem Hossain Alal, Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and general-secretary Amirul Islam Alim, Sarwari Rahman and Selima Rahman of Mohila Dal and presidents and general secretaries of Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University JCD units protested the government's "undesirable" acts.
They observed that such behaviour of the government on the holy Eid-ul-Fitr day exposed its "narrow-mindedness and undemocratic Character." Such an activity would impede the flourishing of democracy, they feared.
The leaders expressed hope that the government would refrain from such unwarranted activities in future Monday evening, some distinguished personalities who wanted to meet the BNP chairperson and ex-PM on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Fitr festival were not allowed into her Shaheed Mainul Road residence in the cantonment.
Among those, who were barred from going in, were Shafiq Rehman, Abdul Awal Mintoo, former cabinet secretary Abdul Halim, former PM Khaleda's Secretary Khandaker Shahidul Islam and former secretaries Alauddin Ali and Mohammed Mohsin.
