Ivy gets released from hospital

Voices firmness to clear footpaths of hawkers

Wednesday, 24 January 2018

Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Dr Selina Hayat Ivy returned to her residence, after receiving treatment for six days at a Dhaka hospital on Tuesday noon, report agencies.
Her younger brother Ahmed Ali Reja Uzzal confirmed the news.
On Thursday (January 18), Ivy suddenly felt sick at her office at Narayanganj Nagar Bhaban and was rushed to Dhaka by ambulance. Later, she was admitted to the CCU of Labaid Hospital.
Councillors, local political activists and media men met her to enquire about her health condition and prayed for her well-being.
Meanwhile, the mayor has once again said hawkers in Narayanganj cannot run their businesses on footpaths.
She said, "The footpaths of hexxxxr city are meant for the public."
The NCC mayor made the comments while talking to the reporters after coming out of the hospital.
"A four-storey building will be constructed for the hawkers and they will move in there. My message is clear the hawkers will run their businesses in the Hawkers' Market."
She described last week's fierce clashes between supporters of her and Awami League MP Shamim Osman as 'the victory of peace against weapons'.
"I am a tested soldier of Sheikh Hasina. I do not need to prove myself time and again. I am a dedicated worker of the Awami League. I am a fighter, a leader," Ivy said in a clear reference to Shamim Osman.
Tension was running high in Narayanganj after the city corporation moved to drive away roadside vendors, when MP Shamim sided with the hawkers and threatened with dire consequences.
