Voter apathy in election

Sunday, 10 March 2019

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) recently said that the Election Commission (EC) was planning to use electronic voting machines (EVM) in future so that it can make sure that ballot boxes could not be stuffed on the night prior to any election.
Such statements from the EC can make most voters question the credibility of the commission. No matter how well the election is organised, voters may have doubts about the fairness of the election process. We have seen a glimpse of this situation during the latest Dhaka North City Corporation election.
In the past, it has been seen that most ruling parties of our country tried to influence the results of elections.
The election is always a festive time for Bangladeshi people. People visit their own wards and villages to vote for the candidates. The country has a high rate of citizens voting in the polls, even higher than the developed nations. Usually before any election, enthusiasm and tension seem to grow. But enthusiasm seemed absent among voters during the DNCC election.
It seems like voters' are losing their interest. This is an ominous sign for the democracy. Hopefully the government will take steps to address this situation.
