Voters bombed on way to poll centre: Cop among 10 hurt

A policeman was among 10 people injured in polls-related violence in Jessore, Gopalganj and Meherpur districts on Wednesday. In Meherpur, at least five voters were bombed on their way to a polling centre in Gangni upazila in the morning. Locals said the five were injured, one critically, as miscreants hurled bombs on them on their way to a polling center. In Gopalganj, a policeman was injured as voters attacked the law enforcers while they were trying to resist the unruly voters from being entering a polling centre in Sadar upazila in the morning. The rowdy people also hurled cocktail at the cops. Constable Basir Uddin, 30, who received severe splinter injuries in his abdomen and legs, was undergoing treatment at a private clinic in the district. In Jessore, four people were injured in separate incidents early today. Three men were injured in an explosion Krishnanagar village in Jhhikargachha Upazila at dead of night. In separate incident, a person, said to be a supporter of a chairman candidate, was shot at and injured. Jhhikargachha Police Station OC Kamruzzaman said the incident took place late at night. Those injured in the blast were rushed to Jessore Medical College Hospital (JMCH). They are ‘Sohan’, 20, ‘Samu’, 20 and ‘Milon’, 22. JMCH’s Dr Hussain Shafayat said that their face and hands were burnt and Samu lost both his eyes in the bomb blast. One Shahidul Islam, 35, hospitalised with bullet injuries was being treated at the hospital, said Dr Shafayat. Shahidul claimed that he is a supporter of an Awami League backed Chairman candidate for the Upazila polls, according to a news agency.
