Voters' registration begins in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Sept 25 (BSS): The Pilot Project for preparation of fresh voters' list with photographs and national identity (ID) cards was formally launched in 11 Union Parishad (Ups) under Sadar Upazila here Monday, district election officials said.
Trained technical teams of the Armed Forces led by Lt Col Ahmed Tabrez Shams Chowdhury are providing all necessary technical assistance to the Election Commission (EC) in conducting the registration process.
Talking to the news agency here this (Tuesday) afternoon, District Election Officer (DEO) Subhash Chandra Sarker told that registration of the voters' began Monday at 14 computerised centres in Mominpur, Haridebpur and Uttam UPs and will continue until September 28 next.
Later, the same process will begin in the other eight UPs in phases to complete the tasks by next October 10 in Sadar Upazila, said the DEO adding that nearly 1,000 voters are being registered at each registration centre in the rural areas everyday.
A total of 56 computerised centres will be set up in all 99 wards of the 11 UPs under Sadar Upazila for the project for which 111 assistant registration officers have been appointed for overseeing the data collection by 892 trained enumerators under the supervision of 197 supervisors.
The door-to-door delivery of relevant forms and collection of data for the registration of voters continues now in full swing with huge enthusiasm and the enumerators have so far distributed over 0.26 million forms to the eligible voters in all 11 UPs.
While talking to the news agency today (Tuesday), a number of enthusiastic voters including women in Mominpur UP told the news agency that they were eagerly waiting to participate in the registration.
The officials concerned said that the registration process might complete earlier in the rural areas than in the urban areas, as the rural people seemed to be more enthusiastic.
Lt Col Shams Chowdhury told the news agency that he also observed huge enthusiasm among the voters in all 11 UPs of Sadar Upazila where the turnout might be 100 per cent ahead of the scheduled period.
Meanwhile, the work of preparing the voters' list with photographs and national ID card will begin in Gazipur Municipality area on October 7, election office sources said.
A preparatory coordination meeting in this connection was held today at the district administration office with the deputy commissioner in the chair.
Among others, army commander of Gazipur area, district election officer, upazila election officer, chairman of Gazipur municipality and district information officer were present at the meeting.
