FE Report | Thursday, 26 June 2008

Businessmen from Bangladesh and Turkey have vowed to strengthen the economic ties between the two countries through exploring the business opportunities.

The vow came in a recent business conference held in Istanbul which was attended by business leaders from 20 countries, said a press statement issued by Turkey-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TBCCI).

Bangladesh was represented with 22 eminent businessmen from leading companies in the conference tilted Turkey-Asia Pacific Foreign Trade Bridge II.

The Bangladesh team included Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president Annisul Huq, vice president Abu Alam Chowdhury, Mr. Mojibur Rahman from Uttara Knitting-Dyeing Ltd., Mr. A.K.M. Rafiquddin from Development Design Consultant and Mr. Abdul Haque from Haqs Bay Automobile Ltd.

Annisul Huq said Turkey has an advance technology and Bangladesh has low cost manpower. Turkey can sell many technology-dependant products to Bangladesh and buy labour dependant products from Bangladesh.

" Thus, the two countries can increase the volume of trade 3-4 times and as far as I can see, Bangladeshi businessmen don't have enough knowledge about the Turkey market and Turkish people. In the same manner, Turkish businessmen don't know much about the business opportunities in Bangladesh and its people," the FBCCI chief said.

Bangladeshi businessmen held more than 20 meetings to explore the business opportunities during the conference.

Mr. Fikret Cicek, the TBCCI chairman termed the meeting as a stepping stone in developing the trade relations between the two countries.

He also stressed that regular visits and interactions should take place among the businessmen of the two countries to strengthen the bilateral trade.

He said currently Turkey is the 17th biggest economy of the world and 6th largest economy in Europe.

In another business conference titled 'Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (TUSKON), Lusaka Textile Company of Bangladesh looked for business partners.

Director of the company Md. Kawsar Zaman Sarker said they are also willing to get into the Turkish market by both exporting their products and importing from Turkey.
