Wanted, excellent newscasters

Saturday, 1 November 2008

Ever watched and listened to the English news on BTV or any other local TV channel? Do you understand what is being said? Does it even remotely sound as human speech?
Rather it sounds more like the sound made by a constipated man in the toilet. The emphasis is alright but no substance comes out after so much labour.
Is there nobody to select newscasters properly? We Bengalees do not want any antics in our TV news broadcasts. We want simple words pronounced simply so that ordinary people also can make out what is being said. Foreign listeners, for whom especially the special efforts are being made, can also understand and appreciate such unlaboured pronunciation.
Do you remember Anwar Hussain, son of Dr. Mahmud Hussain and nephew of former Indian President Zakir Hussain, who used to read news on Karachi radio during the 1965 Indo-Pak war? Nobody could have failed to take in any single word he uttered. Yet no one ever thought him to be a rustic. And even our Mahmudur Rahman was also excellent as a newscaster.
It is hoped that our TV authorities would take more care is selecting newscasters and in their training.
