Saturday, 30 August 2014

War crimes convict Abdul Alim died while under treatment at the prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital on Thursday. The hospital’s director Abdul Majid Bhuiyan said that Alim, 84, died around 1.15pm. The International Crimes Tribunal-2 in its judgment delivered on October 9 last year said that Alim, also a former minister, will spend the rest of his life in prison for committing large-scale atrocities with the occupation forces in Joypurhat during Bangladesh’s independence struggles in 1971. In its verdict, the ICT-2 said Alim deserved death for the war crimes but handed down the life sentence to him considering his age and disability. Once a Muslim League leader Alim joined BNP in late ’80s. He was the third former minister to be found guilty of crimes committed during the country’s Leberation War, according to a news agency.
